2013 Honorees

The 1958-1960 New Waterford Mount Carmel

Juvenile/Junior Baseball Teams

The Coal Bowl Board of Directors is pleased to be honouring the 1958 and 1960 New Waterford Mount Carmel Juvenile/Junior Baseball Championship teams.

In 1958 the New Waterford Mount Carmel Juveniles capped off their season by playing for the Nova Scotia Juvenile 19 and Under Title against the Halifax Royals. The first game in the best of 3 series was held at the famous Wanderers Ball Park in Halifax and New Waterford trounced the home team by a score of 5-0. In game 2, played in New Waterford, Halifax won 4-2 to force the double-header tie breaking game in which New Waterford edged out the competition 7-5 to be crowned the Nova Scotia Juvenile Baseball Champs.

In 1960 the team reunited for another successful season and competed for the Nova Scotia Junior 21 and Under Title against the Dartmouth Arrows in a best of 5 series. New Waterford lost the first 2 games in Dartmouth and returned home for the final 3 games of the series down 2-0. They made a strong comeback though winning games 4 and 5 decisively by scores of 9-3 and 11-9 to force game 5. In the final game New Waterford Mount Carmel dominated the play and beat the Arrows 7-3 to be crowned The Nova Scotia Junior Baseball Champs.

This team is an important part of our community's sports heritage as they remain the last New Waterford baseball team to capture a Nova Scotia Junior Title.

The 2013 Coal Bowl Classic honours the New Waterford Mount Carmel Baseball Team for their championship play.
