1959 New Waterford Giants Maritime Senior Baseball Champions
The 1959 New Waterford Giants were the first Senior Baseball team to bring the Maritime Championship home to Cape Breton. All members of this team were from the New Waterford area, with the average age being 23 years, making them one of the youngest senior teams to compete in Provincial and Maritime finals.
The Giants won the five-team Cape Breton Senior League schedule and then entered into the league play- offs. They defeated the Sydney Steel Kings five games to none with one game ending in a tie. They then went on to defeat the Sydney Mines Ramblers five games to one, to win the Cape Breton Senior Baseball Championship. The Giants ended up in the Nova Scotia finals against the Canning Habs who had defeated the Halifax and District league winners in their play-off round.
The Giants defeated the Canning team two games to none with two games ending in ties. The Giants then met the Woodstock Elks, the New Brunswick Champions. The Giants won this series two games to none with the final game going fifteen innings before an estimated crowd of five to six thousand fans. The Giants had completed twenty-one play-off games winning seventeen, tying three and losing one, to become the 1959 Maritime Senior Baseball Champions.
