Sussex, NBLex MacDonald was an "all-around" athlete, participating in the sports of: rugby, baseball, and basketball. The sport in which he excelled and left his mark in New Waterford was basketball.
Lex completed elementary and secondary school at St. Agnes. After leaving high school, he worked in No. 16 colliery for two years in the early 1950's. He then entered the Armed Forces in 1954 and spent three years with them. After completing his tour of duty, Lex came back to New Waterford and to the sport of basketball.
Lex played senior basketball with the New Waterford Strands from 1959 through to 1962. During that time, he was a key player in instrumenting the winning of three Maritime titles for the "Strands".
Lex then moved to Montreal where he married Dorothy Jury. They have two children: Bruce and Wendy. His son is presently living in Dartmouth/Halifax and his daughter is presently liv- ing in Toronto. He worked in Montreal for 13 years, where he passed away at the age of 37.
It is with great pleasure that the Coal Bowl Directors have the Lex MacDonald Jr. Division in the 1990 Coal Bowl Classic.

Bowmanville, ONMartin was born in New Waterford. He completed elementary and secondary school at St. Agnes. During this time he was participating in the sports of basketball, softball and rugby. Mar- tin excelled in the sport of rugby playing with both the Junior and Senior Trojans. He was multi-talented excelling in basket- ball, where he was a key member of the St. Agnes Juvenile Team in the early thirties.
After finishing high school, Martin continued to participate in both sports, rugby and basketball. He was an integral part of the New Waterford Strands basketball teams during the late thirties and forties, culminating in the "Strands" winning the Canadian Intermediate Championship in 1947 in New Water- ford. The Strands Basketball Team were inducted into the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame in 1980 for this event.
Martin worked for eight years in the coal mines. He left the mines to join the police force for the Town of New Waterford, where he was eventually elected Chief of Police. He then left his position to work for the Nova Scotia Juvenile Court as a probation officer. Martin retired after some 25 years as counsellor supervisor.
Martin was prominent in community affairs and various organizations during his working years and remains so today an avid sportsman. He married Laura Lever, his late wife. They have three children: a son, Gregor and two daughters, Bren- da and Laura Lee. All reside in Cape Breton.
