Donnie MacAulay ranks high on the list of New Waterford's most gifted athletes. He is an accomplished performer in softball, track and field and basketball. Donnie was a member of the Central High School Squad, which won the Provincial High School Championship in 1960 and the Canadian Juvenile Championship in 1961. During the National Juvenile Championship playoff, Donnie scored a whopping 89 points during the 3 game playoff.

Donnie is best remembered as the slick small forward with the New Waterford Strands, a perennial Maritime Powerhouse, winners of numerous Provincial and Maritime titles. Donnie was a leading scorer and rebounder for the Strands in the sixties and early seventies. He was New Waterford's answer to NBA Hall-of-Famer, Elgin Baylor, as Donnie mastered his floating bank shot from various vantage points on the court. He is best remembered for sinking a last second foul shot, to complete a three point play at the buzzer and send the 1970 Maritime Championship game into overtime at Mt. Carmel Gym; a game eventually won by the Strands in a marathon Easter Sunday doubleheader.

Donnie still continues to participate in competitive athletics. For the past number of years, he finds time to participate in approximately 100 slow pitch games per summer. In 1995, he led his team to the Maritime Slow Pitch Tournament advancing to the Nationals, pitched 8 games with a 7-1 record, batted an astounding .833 and was named MVP for the tournament. At age 52, Donnie was the only player on his team over 30.

Coal Bowl '99 is pleased to have Donnie MacAulay, one of New Waterford's most accomplished athletes, as a Division Chairperson.
