1999 Honorees
1960-61 Intermediate Ladies Basketball Champions
The New Waterford Intermediate Ladies Basketball Team coached by Jim "Fox" Chiasson, captured the Nova Scotia Championship in Halifax on the last weekend in April, 1961.
The New Waterford squad scored a come- from-behind 25-21 decision over Antigonish C.Y.O. in the Championship Game.
Leading the way for the Champions were Lillian "Mud" MacDonald with 15 points and Joan MacKenzie with 8 points.
Trailing at the three quarter mark 14-12, the Cape Bretoners out-hooped their opponents 13-7 in the final quarter for the Championship win.
Five teams took part in the tournament, Yarmouth, Bridgewater, New Waterford, Antigonish and Shelburne.
Bridgewater won the Consolation by defeat- ing Yarmouth 33-27. Antigonish took the mea- sure of Shelburne 41-22 to gain entry into the Final.
There were eight members on the team: Mary Muise, Joan MacKenzie, Lillian MacDonald, Margaret Gallant, Christina MacLellan, Celeste Gallant, Mary MacMillan and Isobel Fleming and Coach Fox Chiasson. Of the eight members on the team, seven of them are retired former school teachers.
Lillian MacDonald played Varsity Basket- ball at St. F.X. University, Mary MacMillan played Varsity for MacMaster University out of Hamilton, Ontario.
