Winnipeg, MBArt Timmons was born in New Waterford and attended St. Agnes School until Grade 11. He moved on to Central High School to complete his Grade 12. Art attended St. Francis Xavier University and graduated in 1967 with his Bachelor of Education degree.
Art began his teaching career at St. Agnes School in 1967 and remained there until 1970. Art joined the staff at Breton Education Centre when it opened in 1970 and remained there until his retirement in 1997. Art was Department Head of Physical Education during his tenure at BEC.
Art played soccer, hockey and baseball in his early years and throughout high school. He was captain of the New Waterford Trojans, which was the first senior soccer team in the town of New Waterford.
Art's philosophy of education extended beyond the walls of the classroom or gymnasium-he became actively involved in extracurricular activities at the school level. He immediately participated in coaching when he began his teaching career at St. Agnes. Art coached various teams while at St. Agnes, and it was there that he started the first girls' soccer program in Cape Breton. Art continued his coaching career as he moved on to Breton Education Centre. While at BEC, he coached soccer, hockey and track and field. However, it was his commitment to girls' soccer that brought him prominence. Art coached the BEC girls to three provincial championships in high school soccer and these banners still hang proudly in this very gym.
Art's dedication and commitment to excellence in teaching expanded to coaching. He was recognized by his peers for his fair play and support in the formation of girls' soccer teams at other schools.
In addition to interscholastic coaching, Art was involved in coaching and/or served in executive positions in minor baseball, minor hockey, and minor soccer. Art also coached senior men's soccer in New Waterford, winning the Challenge Cup (NS Championship) one year and reaching the finals in two other years.
Art has been-and continues to be-very active in a variety of community and professional organizations. He is a true volunteer who always has time for others. Art is married to Claire Roach and has two children, Lorne and Celeste-both BEC graduates-and he is the proud Papa to Emma and Kate. It is with honor that the Coal Bowl Board of Directors name Art Timmons a Division Chairperson for Coal Bowl 2005.
