1954-55 Mount Carmel Intermediate 

Women's Team

The Mount Carmel Intermediate Women's Team I which won the Nova Scotia Championship in 1955, was coached by Russel MacNeil, the Physi- cal Education teacher at Mount Carmel High School, and captained by Winnie (Williams) Gillis.

The Mount Carmel team romped to the N.S. Championship (the first such championship to come to New Waterford) and claimed the Ralph Cooley trophy, emblematic of the Nova Scotia Championship.

The team defeated Dalhousie University, Middleton, and the Halifax Y.W.C.A. to claim the championship. Team Captain Winnie Gillis paced New Waterford against Dalhousie University with 23 points in a 37-24 win. Other scorers were Sis MacNeil with 5 points, Lillian Baldwin with 5 points, and Shirley MacDonald with 4 points.

In the victory over the Halifax Y.W.C.A., Winnie Gillis and Sis MacNeil paced the locals with 17 and 15 points respectively. Other scorers were Lottie MacNeil and Lillian Baldwin with 4 points apiece.
