Toronto, ONAl Dwyer was born in New Waterford to Richard and Lillian Dwyer. He resided on Thirteenth Street across from what was then called "The New Waterford Baseball Park". It was here Al spent many years honing his skill as a baseball player.
Al was a member of Mount Carmel Parish. He attended Mount Carmel Elementary School, Junior High School, and finally Senior High School where he was known as an outstanding and talented baseball and basketball player. After finishing high school, Al worked for thirty years with the Canadian Postal System. He retired in 1985 with a per- manent medical disability.
Al played many sports, but he favored and excelled in baseball and basketball. He was a tremendous shortstop, playing Midget Juvenile and Junior Baseball with the "New Waterford Bisons". But it was as a basketball player that Al distinguished himself.
Al played basketball during the years 1958 through 1963. He played with the "New Waterford Strands Senior Team", which had won four Nova Scotia and three Maritime Titles. Besides being a great athlete, Al was also involved within the community. He was a very dedicated individual with a sense of duty and commitment. He was a valued member of the Knights of Columbus for some thirty-odd years. Al is survived by his wife Kay (Roper) and his daughter Deborah, as well as his mother Lillian and sister June, all of whom are of New Waterford. His brother Jim resides in Glace Bay.
The Board of Directors of the New Waterford Coal Bowl Classic are pleased to announce the Al Dwyer Division for 1993.

"Laddie", as he was affectionately known, resided in St. Agnes Parish and he attended St. Agnes Elementary School, Junior High School and Senior High School. It was during this period in his life that he perfected his skill as a basketball player.
Laddie was an athlete of many talents as he played hockey and boxed. As an amateur boxer, Laddie in 1945 won the "Golden Gloves" Middleweight Championships for Cape Breton. During the same year he was a member of the Cape Breton Intermediate Hockey Championship Team.
After finishing high school Laddie worked briefly in the coal mines before entering the Canadian Navy. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Laddie worked as a Driver- Salesman for White's Bakery of New Waterford, until its closure. He then continued to work as a construction carpenter until his retirement.
Although Laddie played many sports, it was as a basket- ball player for which he was best known.
His basketball career began in 1935, when he was a member of the first team to win a Maritime Junior Cham- pionship the "Strands". Playing out of the famous "Strand" Gym on the corner of Plummer Avenue and King Street, it became the scene of many Maritime and Cana- dian Championship encounters.
Laddie played basketball through the years 1935-1953, culminating in the "Strands" team winning the "Canadian Intermediate Championship" in the 1947-48 season. This event took place in New Waterford against the University of Ottawa. Laddie's basketball years also contributed to win- ning numerous Maritime titles.
Laddie was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame in 1980, as a member of the 1947-48 Championship "Strands" Team.
Laddie is married to the former Helen Brown and they reside in Glace Bay.
