1963-64 Central High School Provincial Champs

1963-64 proved to be a very successful year for the boy's basketball team.

The season started early and a large number of boys turned out for the various practices. The team shaped up very quickly and early impressions showed that the team would be a very strong one in all aspects of the game.

There was no league in the area, so the team played local high school and senior teams. The New Waterford Strands gave stiff competition and prepared the team for the Nova Scotia Tournament.

The tournament was held at Hants West Regional High School. Central drew the bye in the tournament which decided the Nova Scotia winners in the Headmaster's "B" section. The hospitality accorded the members of the team was beyond compare, as the boys and coach enjoyed themselves immensely.

For the first game, Central drew Parrsboro Regional High. This game was not particularly close and they won rather easily by a score of 61-40. The other game matched defending champs Lockeport, against Hants West. Lockeport won easily.

The championship game against Lockeport started very quickly, and at the end of the first quarter, the scoreboard read Central 11, Lockeport 10. Lockeport then scrambled to a half-time lead of five points as the score stood at Lockeport 25, Central 20.

After a pep talk from coach, Mr. Robert MacDonald, the team regained its confidence and at three quarter time Central led by a margin of one point. The last quarter was fast and exciting with Central finally catching fire. The final score was Central 49, Lockeport 38.

However, the Nova Scotia "B" title did not end the season's play for Central. From Hants West they proceeded to Halifax to compete for the Canadian Juvenile title. Both games ended in defeat for Central as they were beaten by Queen Elizabeth High from Halifax. Q.E.H. later went on to win the Canadian Juvenile title.

Another of the laurels brought to Central in that year was the Pat Patterson Tournament, significant of the best high school basketball teams in Cape Breton.
