Lake Country, BCGreg MacSween was born in New Waterford and attended Mount Carmel School. After high school, Greg attended Xavier College, St. Francis Xavier University and Dalhousie University. Greg began his teaching career at Mount Carmel High School and moved on to Breton Education Centre when it opened in 1970. Greg is presently in his 39th year of teaching and has been the Science Department Head at Breton Education Centre for the past twenty years.
Greg played both soccer and hockey throughout his athletic career but is renowned as a goaltender in hockey. Greg played two years of junior hockey with Xavier College and was an all-star goalie with the Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates in 1966-67. He then went on to win a Nova Scotia College Hockey Championship with King's Coliege in 1968. Greg followed this up playing senior hockey with the Glace Bay Miners.
Greg returned to play in New Waterford when the rink opened and won a Nova Scotia Intermediate Title with the Scotchtown Sabres in 1974. Greg was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the playoffs for the championship team. Greg continued to play thirteen years of Intermediate and Senior hockey with various teams including the New Waterford Cavaliers who won the Nova Scotia title in 1984. Greg is still playing recreational hockey several times a week at the New Waterford Rink. When Greg laces up the pads, everyone knows its time to play.
Besides an outstanding playing career, Greg volunteered many hours at the rink as a coach, executive member of a team and several various community boards and committees. He coached the New Waterford Midget Jets to two provincial titles in 1968 and 1970. Greg was the coach of the Breton Education Centre Bears High School Hockey team for ten years. He served as President of the Cape Breton Colonels Major Midget (N.S. champs 1988) and executive member of the Nova Scotia Major Midget League for five years.
Greg has been serving on the Board of Directors of the New Waterford and District Community Centre for the past ten years and has been a member of the executive of the New Waterford Tennis Club for over 20 years. His dedication and commitment to these community organizations is greatly appreciated. Greg always displays a leadership role in whatever group he is a member. He has a true sense of community and helps support many causes in the New Waterford area. Education and community are extremely important to Greg and are only surpassed by family. Greg is married to Anne (Timmons) and they have four children (David, Maureen, Shannon, and Patricia). It is with great respect that the Coal Bowl board of Directors name Greg MacSween a Division Chairperson for Coal Bowl 2007.

Lake Country, BCPhonse Brenna was born in New Waterford and attended Mount Carmel School and Breton Education Cetnre. Phonse is the son of Violet (Cameron) Brenna and the late Sylvain Brenna and has seven brothers and four sisters.
Phonse's athletic career focused on baseball, fastball, soccer, and hockey. He played on seven different Nova Scotia Championship teams. He was a member of the New Waterford Dodgers Intermediate "A" Baseball team that won the 1987 Provincial Championship. This team also won the Maritime title.
Phonse won back-to-back Provincial Fastball Championships with the New Waterford Hi Fi Hawks in 1976 and 1977. He celebrated two Nova Scotia Soccer Provincial Championships. The Breton Bears, Division AAA High School Team won the Nova Scotia title in 1972 and the New Waterford Senior Strands won the Nova Scotia Challenge Cup in 1972. Phonse was also a member of the 1972 Nova Scotia Canada Games Soccer Team. He played in Bermuda that year and then in Burnaby, British Columbia representing his province. He scored Nova Scotia's first goal at the Canada Games, a 2-0 win over Saskatchewan. Hugh Townsend of the Halifax Herald wrote that "Brenna was one of the top stars in the competition".
Phonse was a member of the New Waterford Jets Midget Hockey team that won the provincial title in 1969. He also played for the Scotchtown Sabres Intermediate D 1974 rrovincial Champs. Phonse scored five goals in the 7-5 championship game over Hubbard's that year.
The diminutive Brenna was always a scoring threat in whatever sport he played. His playmaking ability on the ice and fields was second to none and he has that special track for penetrating any defence. His leadership on and off the ice and fields was recognized often because he was captain of five of the seven Provincial Championship teams he played on. His down-to-earth personality and sense of humour made Phonse a valued member of every team he played on and popular member of our community.
Phonse is married to Marion Barrington and they have two children, Debbie and David. He is a member of Local 56, Steel Metal Workers of America and it is with honour that the Coal Bowl Board of Directors name Phonse Brenna a Division Chairperson for Coal Bowl 2007.
