Marshall Desveaux has often been recognized as one of New Waterfords finest all round athletes. He started his basketball career at the Strand at the age of 14 under the tutelage of Jack MacKenzie. Marshall played many years with the championship "Strand" teams of that era, highlighted with their Canadian Title Win in 1946-47. Marshall also excelled in baseball and hockey. In hockey, he held his own with many great players of his era. He played with NHL stars Bingo Campman and Turk Broda when he was in the army.

"Duffy" as he is affectionatly called, is largely responsible for keeping basketball alive in the community many years after his playing days. During the years 1958-1970 he coached the New Waterford Strands to seven Nova Scotia and five Maritime Senior titles. Mr. Desveaux still maintains an active interest in basket- ball coaching the "AA" girls team at Breton Education Centre. The Coal Bowl is honored to have The "Marshall Desveaux Division" in the 1986 Tournament.
